Today we explored the concept of Tonal Centers. This is what is referred to as a KEY in music. We are playing in the key of A major. When we establish a chord as our tonal center, it is like our home base. It is stable. We use a roman numeral to designate that tonal center, in this case the “I.” This is alsoi called the TONIC.
If A is ‘one’, then counting up from A to five, you get E. That is our ‘five’ chord. Roman number V. The dominant isn’t stable. It wants to resolve back down a fifth back to A. The dominant wants to resolve back home to I.
The following sequence (which was recorded especially for you!) is at 64 beats per minute. It starts on A major for two bars, then switches to E major for two bars and so on. Use your ear to get a sense of when it resolves—where your tonal center is.
